Intel 5G System Design Engineer in Santa Clara, California

Job Description

Join Intel's Next Generation & Standards (NGS) Group and the 5G revolution. In NGS, we design and develop advanced mobile technologies to create wireless ecosystems of the future. The 5G System Design Engineer builds state-of-the-art 5G wireless modem prototypes to demonstrate next-generation technologies.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop algorithm reference models for prototypes of 5G wireless baseband modem and/or machine learning technologies

  • Model, simulate, optimize, and verify digital modem sub-systems that are part of 5G prototype designs implemented in FPGA platforms

  • Characterize fixed-point performance and optimize fixed-point algorithms to improve performance, latency, RTL area, etc.

  • Create bit-accurate Python, C/C++ simulation models of digital modem sub-systems used for link-level performance characterization, DSP algorithm optimization, and FPGA verification

  • Collaborate with the standards team and system architects to translate communication models and algorithms into fixed-point reference models for prototype baseband modem designs

  • Support digital design, firmware, and RF teams with verification and bring-up of FPGA modem prototypes

  • Apply advanced problem solving to complex modem subsystems including PHY, RF, and lower stack implementations

  • Assess risks and identify issues & solutions to achieve program goals and project objectives in a timely & efficient manner

  • Escalate issues and drive resolution of technical issues with cross-functional teams

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 4 years of experience or Masters of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 3 years of experience in digital communications theory, signal processing, random processes and/or computer-based link-level simulation and modeling

  • Experience with one OR more of the following: Python C/C++, Matlab, or other simulation & modeling tools/languages

  • Knowledge of communications systems, e.g., 5G, LTE, UMTS.

  • Experience with simulation & modeling of communications systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters of Science or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering with demonstrated technical leadership and a strong communications-system engineering background

  • Experience with design, verification, and debug of baseband wireless modems coded in RTL VHDL/Verilog and targeted for FPGA or ASIC, including debug in RTL simulation or lab environment

  • Familiarity with demodulation and decoding algorithms for OFDM systems

  • Prior experience with fixed-point modeling for hardware verification

  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl

  • Experience with revision-control systems such as GIT or Clearcase
